After a record-breaking day that gave Joan Lascorz the top spot on the grid and the best time on the track, the winner of the first race of the World Supersport season seemed almost pre-determined.
But Eugene Laverty, who had an unimpressive time during free practice and the qualifying rounds, dominated race one and finished four seconds ahead of Lascorz for his fifth WSS career victory.

Joan Lascorz won his second career World Supersport pole position on opening day at Phillip Island, and he did it by smashing the track record by nearly a half second.
The record was set last year by Kenan Sofuoglu, who started the day in the provisional pole position, but dropped back to second place behind Lascorz.
Sofuoglu and Lascorz have been switching between first and second throughout the qualifying rounds, but Lascorz earns the top spot by running 1’33” laps. Lascorz’s lap times were two seconds faster than the Pedercini Kawasakis in the Superbike category.
Michelle Piro comes in at third place just 4 hundredths of a second behind fellow Ten Kate Honda teammate Sofuouglu. Eugene Laverty moved up to fourth place with a late surge, knocking Katsuaki Fujiwara down to fifth.
The top five spots are claimed by Honda and Kawasaki, but Ducati has made some improvements and has taken spot six and seven with riders David Solomon and Chaz Davies.

The 2010 World Supersport season kicks off this weekend in Phillip Island, Australia. The World SuperSport Championships are typically a showcase for Honda and their CBR600RR, but last year Carl Crutchlow ripped the trophy from Honda’s hands on top of his Yamaha YZF R1.
Crutchlow won’t be back to defend his title, and neither will Yamaha. Both the rider and the manufacturer have graduated in class to the World Superbike Championship, leaving a field of just 17 riders to participate in the WSS, and only three manufacturers.

World Supersport: Kawasaki Supersport makes major progressPress Release With an all-new bike for the 2009 season and a new team in Provec Motocard.com to run it, the official Kawasaki WSS effort was very much an unknown quantity in most regards in the early season. Two things were certain however, the prowess of the riding line-up of Joan Lascorz and Katsuaki Fujiwara and the determination to shine in the results.
There have been unlucky moments in the season, one DNF for Lascorz and three for Fujiwara, but the rate of progress of the new bike has been very noticeable, most recently taking Lascorz to his second runner-up spot of the season, at Donington. Lascorz is now a clear fourth in the championship, behind only the two human dynamos of Cal Crutchlow and Eugene Laverty, and 2007 World Champion Kenan Sofuoglu. |

Cal Crutchlow is proving to be the man on form in the championship with his second win of the season at Monza. The Yamaha World Supersport rider now has an 18-point lead in the championship over his closest rival, Eugene Laverty (Parkalgar Honda), who finished fourth. The race came to a head four laps before the end, when Crutchlow gradually pulled away from Fabien Foret (Yamaha World Supersport) and Laverty to take the win. The battle for the podium was an exciting one, with Joan Lascorz (Kawasaki Provec) powering up through the field to take a superb second place. The Spaniard managed to get the better in a sprint finish, confirming his Kawasaki to be right on the pace. Team-mate Katsuaki Fuijiwara followed this up with sixth place. The two Hannspree Ten Kate Honda men, Andrew Pitt and Kenan Sofuoglu were never in the hunt, finishing fifth and ninth respectively, while Garry McCoy and Gianluca Nannelli took the two Triumph Be1 machines to top 10 finishes. |

Eugene Laverty claims his first win in World Supersport The sandy winds and blazing sun in the desert of Qatar were no deterrent for Eugene Laverty as he claimed his first World Supersport win. On a day where the temperature was hot and the competition even hotter, Laverty pulled through.
The first row at the start of the race, consisting of Eugene Laverty (Parkalgar Honda), Andrew Pitt, Cal Crutchlow (Yamaha World Supersport) and Kenan Sufuoglu (HANNspree Ten Kate Honda) was a reflection of the top four riders at the end.
Crutchlow led the pack going into the first turn, but Laverty quickly stole the lead. Laverty and Crutchlow, followed by Pitt and Sufuoglu formed a single-file line around every turn, leaning in rhythm to the music of their machines. Pitt, sitting in third place, fell out of line to peek down the side of Crutchlow, but couldn’t make his move. In the second lap, Pitt got his chance, and made it into the lead; just a few turns later Crutchlow responded taking back his spot in second. Laverty began to pull away from the pack slightly, but the Yamaha made up the gap coming close to contact with the Parkalgar Honda. Pitt made another move on Crutchlow, sneaking through the inside into second, but Crutchlow reacted, trying to keep his position, almost taking himself out of the race. |

World Supersport: Crutchlow Hits WSS Running
After a promising test at Portimao last year Yamaha World Supersport Team rider Cal Crutchlow was only 0.050 seconds away from setting the best time at the most recent Portimao session. Not bad for a rider who had to jump into the competitive shark pool of World Supersport racing after two seasons of BSB competition, on Suzuki and then Honda machinery. On the other hand, maybe it is no surprise as Cal is already a podium finisher at World Superbike level, after his brilliant wet weather second place at Donington last year. Crutchlow had much previous 600cc experience to draw on when making the move to WSS this year, having been the British Supersport Champion in 2006, riding a Northpoint Ekerold Honda. |
