Seventeen-year-old Norwegian Sturla Fagerhaug finished fifth and now has a three-point advantage over arch rival Jakub Kornfeil, the 16-year-old Czech who was eight.

Red Bull Rookies Cup: Hiura and Marino fastest but Fagerhaug and Kornfeil are there

Press Release

Kornfeil Red Bull Rookies Cup

A brilliant final lap put Daijiro Hiura on pole position for the final two races of the 2009 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup season, a race on Saturday and the final on Sunday of the Cardion AB Czech Grand Prix. The 15 year old Japanese just nudged aside 16 year old Frenchman Florian Marino leaving the two Rookies tied for the Cup lead, Sturla Fagerhaug and Jakub Kornfeil, to complete the front row.

Though he is 27 points behind, Hiura can still win the Cup as there are 50 points on offer this weekend and he knows that to do it he must win races even though this track is not his favourite. "I didn't do well here last year so I was not expecting too much. I just worked hard through the practice and step by step went faster, the tyres were well worn at the end and sliding around a lot but on that final lap I managed to get a good rhythm going and a fast time."

A total of seven riders have a mathematical chance of winning the 2009 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup going into the final race weekend in Brno

MotoGP Press Release

Red Bull Rookies Cup

With two races during the Cardion AB Czech Republic Grand Prix weekend, one on Saturday and one on Sunday, the 2009 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup is still wide open.

The six races run so far have seen fortunes swing wildly with 17 year-old Norwegian Sturla Fagerhaug dominating the early months, through pre-season testing and the first four races. High drama in the last two races, in Germany and Britain, saw his Cup lead decimated as he only scored four points while Jakub Kornfeil picked up the maximum 50.

Red Bull Rookie Cup: Kornfeil's double trouble for Fagerhaug

Press Release

Red Bull Rookies Cup Donington Results

For the second time in eight days Jakub Kornfeil produced a perfect victory and with Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup rival Sturla Fagerhaug crashing out again the 16-year-old Czech goes into his home race tied on points with the 17-year-old Norwegian. Spanish 17-year-old Daniel Ruiz rode a great race to second in Britain ahead of 14-year-old Japanese Daijiro Hiura who also put himself into Cup contention. Hiura is 18 points behind Kornfeil and Fagerhaug with 50 points at stake for the double header that wraps up the season. The top seven riders in the Cup can still win it.

While Kornfeil matched his German wet weather disappearing act with an almost identical performance in glorious sunshine at Donington the entertainment was provided by an incredible battle for second. As Pole man Danny Kent faded through the pack to finish an eventual eight it was the two Frenchman Florian Marino and Nelson Major who bashed elbows in second allowing Jake Gagne, Mathew Scholtz, Hiura and Ruiz to close and make it a six-man battle for second.

Red Bull Rookie Cup: Donington Practice - Kent's early Pole

Press Release

Red Bull Rookies Cup

Danny Kent secured his second pole in a row within the first 10 minutes of practice as rain then swept across the Donington circuit for most of the afternoon. The 15 year old Briton looks forward to his home race but knows that Sachsenring winner Jakub Kornfeil will be just one of the threats. The 16 year old Czech was second quickest to Kent in the ultra brief dry period and in a class of his own for most of the wet second qualifying period. Third on the grid and 4th fastest in the wet second session is 14 year old Japanese Daijiro Hiura.

"I'm happy to be on pole again," said Kent. I've just got to make better use of it than I did at the Sachsenring. In the wet I was just concentrating on getting a good rhythm, sorting out braking points and stuff for the wet and not crashing. A dry race would be good but the wet is OK too. I think it's going to be a great race, Jakub, Sturla, Florian Marino, there are a lot of guys who can be at the front."

Red Bull Rookie Cup Donington Preview: Kornfeil closing with home card still to play

Press Release

All About Bikes Redbull Rookies Cup

The dramatic Sachsenring result reminded everyone just how precarious points advantages can be. A slippery track, a tiny mistake and Sturla Fagerhaug's points lead is cut to 25 with 3 races remaining and 75 points still to be won. Two of those races will be at Brno, the double-header final event of the season and Jakub Kornfeil's home track, he lies 2nd in the Cup chase going into this weekend's Donington round.

It is not a 2 man battle either with Daijiro Hiura, Danny Kent, Mathew Scholtz, Florian Marino and Jake Gagne all very much in the picture. 15 year old Californian Gagne is particularly worth watching if you like an outsider hitting form. Still learning the road racing craft he has now been on the podium twice in as many races and could well win a race or 2 before the end of the season.

Red Bull Rookie Cup: Sachsenring Race - July 18th:  Kornfeil's perfection, Fagerhaug's misfortune.

Press Release

Red Bukk Rookies Cup

A flag to flag win for Czech 16 year old Jakub Kornfeil in treacherous conditions at the Sachsenring boosted him to second place in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup. Points leader Sturla Fagerhaug crashed chasing him on the wet and slippery track but the 17 year old Norwegian still has a 25 point advantage after recovering to cross the line 12th and pick up 4 points.

In a drama-packed race, pole man Danny Kent crashed out of 2nd place exiting the final corner having just passed 16 year old South African Mathew Scholtz. That gave Scholtz 2nd and 3rd to 15 year old Californian Jake Gagne. Kent remounted and the 15 year old Englishman crossed the line 6th.

Red Bull Rookie Cup: Sachsenring Preview: Half way to the Cup - Race 5 Preview

Press Release

Sports News Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup

Frantic, back to back, weekends in Germany and England kick off the second half of the 2009 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup. Norwegian 17-year-old Sturla Fagerhaug leads the table by a handsome 43 points from 14 year old Japanese Daijiro Hiura but knows that a repeat of his first corner crash at the Sachsenring last year could turn all that around. With 4 races still to go there are 100 points to be won.

Hiura has yet to add to the Cup victory he scored last year in Portugal but after a fine 2nd place in Assen he is just one of those Fagerhaug will be watching out for. The man really hitting form might be Jake Gagne, the 15 year old Californian is only in his second season as a road racer but following his 3rd in Assen he could continue America's domination at the German track. Cameron Beaubier won in 2007 on his way to the KTM factory 125 GP team and JD Beach won last year on his way to winning the 2008 Cup.

Red Bull Rookie Cup: Fagerhaug on top of 7 man thriller

Press Release

Reb BullA seven man battle for the lead for most of the 16 laps made it the race of the day at the Dutch Grand Prix and all the sweeter for Sturla Fagerhaug who took his 3rd Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup victory of the year. The 17 year old Norwegian finally managed to open an advantage but it was still 4 men fighting for the other podium places at the last corner with Daijiro Hiura coming out ahead of Jake Gagne, Florian Marino and Jakub Kornfeil.

"That was a great race," said a sweaty Fagerhaug as he took his helmet off. "At least I didn't make a mess of the start this time and I managed to get to the front quite early. Then I made a few mistakes and some others got past. I settled down and started to put in some good laps to try and get away but they stayed with me."

Red Bull Rookie Cup: Chasing Fagerhaug again

Press Release

RedBull

Points leader Sturla Fagerhaug has 26 opponents snapping at his heels going into the second day of qualify on Friday ready for Saturday's 4th race in the 2009 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup. The 17 year old Norwegian showed how well he knows the Dutch TT track but realizes that 16 year old Jakub Kornfeil from the Czech Republic is just the first of those who would like to knock him out of Pole Position.

"This is not really a favorite track of mine," admitted Kornfeil who was just 4 tenths slower than Fagerhaug and second quickest. "I like the big open tracks like Mugello and Brno but the bike is working so well, I've got a good feeling, plenty of grip and the engine is running well so I am just enjoying riding it. I am not going to change anything for tomorrow, just ride."

Red Bull Rookie Cup: From Barcelona to Assen - Race 4 Preview

Press Release

Redbull

The fourth race of the season, the Dutch round of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup at Assen, sees the best teenage racers in the World go head to head for glory. Cup leader Sturla Fagerhaug, the 17 year old Norwegian, knows that he will be under the greatest pressure from 26 other Rookies all looking to put a dent in his points lead.

The 20-point advantage that Fagerhaug has over Danny Kent could all be reversed by a single mistake but Sturla knows what he has to do. “For sure during practice the important thing is to get a good race set up. I want to have a reasonable place on the grid but more important than that is that I don’t make a mess of the start. I think I understand a bit better what I have to do so I don't flood the engine like in Mugello. I’ve just got to get it right this time.

Red Bull Rookie Cup: Fagerhaug - disaster to Triumph - Again!

Press Release

AllAboutBikes Sport Result Rbrc

Sturla Fagerhaug won a perfectly judged race to claim his second victory of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup season. The 17 year old Norwegian crossed the line just 0.266 seconds ahead of 16 year old Czech Jakub Kornfeil after the pair had played cat and mouse over the last laps, each hoping the other would lead the final run to the line.

They had broken away from a rabid battle for third. The final place on the podium eventually went to Daijiro Hiura but only after the 14 year old Japanese had dug deep in his considerable talent over the final lap that ended with three crashing as they exited the final turn. Alejandro Pardo high-sided violently and the two South Africans behind him, Brad Binder and Mathew Scholtz came together as the avoided the tumbling Italian.

Red Bull Rookie Cup: Mugello Practice - May 29th - Trying to catch Fagerhaug

Press Release
Sturla Fagerhaug
A sweltering day in Mugello ended with the two qualifying sessions for the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup. Sturla Fagerhaug put one hand on the winner's trophy with a superb demonstration of speed in the first session and while the others scrambled to catch up the 17 year old Norwegian concentrated in the second session on bike set-up and getting ready to race.

French 16 year old Nelson Major put in a blinding lap towards the end of the first session to place himself second on the grid just one 10th of a second slower than Fagerhaug but in doing so used the best of his rear tire so could not come close to matching it in the second 30 minute session. That second period gave fellow Frenchman, 15 year old Florian Marino, the opportunity to move into 3rd, just 6 10ths away from pole.

Red Bull Rookie Cup: Race Three - Mugello

Press Release

Sport News Mugello Circuit

The rolling Tuscan hills beckon the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup to Mugello and the 3rd race of the season. Norwegian 17 year old Sturla Fagerhaug leads the chase after the double header at Jerez but only by 4 points from Danny Kent. The British 15 year old scored a 3rd and a win at Jerez while Fagerhaug's results were 1st and 2nd.

Don't think for a second that the Cup is anything like a 2 rider battle for there are obvious candidates to dismiss that idea. The way that Mathew Scholtz, the 16 year old South African, charged away into the lead from the start of race one in Spain made it look as though he was in a class of his own. The blustery wind that put a number of other riders on ground then caused an off-track excursion for Scholtz. He was second in the restarted first race but a touch of caution and getting mixed up with the wrong riders at the wrong time left him 7th in the second outing.

Red Bull Rookie Cup: Rookies Cross-Training

The sun shone for 3 straight days as 5 of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies went cross-training in Spain, a tough but fun-filled program of physical tests and training, cycling, running, motocross and supermotard in the Barcelona environs expanded their training horizons.

"It was good fun but sometimes very hard," said Jakub Kornfeil, the 16 year old Czech, summing up the feeling of his peers. "For me the hardest was the run in the city, about 5 km, probably the easiest was the supermotard, I really enjoyed that. I have done it before but that was 6 years ago and I seemed to have forgotten everything."

Red Bull Rookie Cup: Harry Stafford recovers at home

Press Release

All About Bikes Harry Stafford

Harry Stafford, badly concussed after crashing during the first Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup race of the season in Jerez on May 2nd, is now at home in England and continues to make a good recovery.

"We got home Saturday afternoon and it's good to be back," said the 15 year old who crashed on the 6th lap while battling for the lead in a close pack and was run over. He sustained a broken right collarbone and a bang to the head that knocked him out and though not deeply unconscious he was taken to hospital in Cadiz where he made slow but steady progress.

"I only remember bits of the race but I know I was enjoying it and not having any trouble running that pace, not trying too hard. I've watched the race and the crash on the website quite a few times and I can see that I was pretty comfortable where I was at the front. It was just a bit unlucky that the racing was so close that I got run over."

Red Bull Rookie Cup: Intense season opener at Jerez

Tyler Hopper
AllAboutBikes Staff-Writer

Race 1 – Cause and Effect, and Second Chances

Cause and Effect was the theme of race one at the Red Bull Rookies Cup this weekend in Jerez.  A two-rider crash between Harry Stafford and Florian Marino halted the first race, resulting in a restart.  Sturla Fagergaug crashed early on in the race and was half a lap behind the leaders when the race was restarted.  A victory by way of second chances, Sturla Fagerhaug had to work until the last lap, but he became the leader and winner of race one of the Red Bull Rookies Cup at Jerez, Spain.

Mathew Scholtz must have had his rubber bands wound pretty tight, because he shot up from the start of the initial race, only to run off the track when the wind took control of his front.  In a tense battle for the lead Stafford’s bike slid and he took a highside; Florian Marino clipped Stafford and went down as well, this is the crash that resulted in the restart.

Kent Passes Fagerhaug to win race 2

AllAboutBikes RedBull Rookies

Danny Kent bettered Sturla Fagerhaug to win a superb and thankfully slightly less dramatic 2nd Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup race at Jerez on Sunday. The blustery Spanish wind still contributed to a number of falls but this time Daijiro Hiura learnt from Saturday's error and came home third ahead of Florian Marino.

Kent, the 15 year old Briton, explained how the wind effected him; "Every time I got in front the wind just pushed me back, it was so much easier to stay in the slipstream. There was no real way to break away. I wasn't going to make the same mistake as yesterday so I kept counting down the laps as I crossed the line and went for it on the last lap, it wasn't an easy move, I was determined, it was 'win it or bin it.'"

Red Bull Rookies Cup: Jerez Practice - May 1st- Hiura leads global tussle in Spain

A thrilling two sessions of qualifying for the first Red Bull Rookies MotoGP Cup race of the year ended with Daijiro Hiura on pole for Saturday and Sunday's races in Jerez, Spain. The 14 year old Japanese just held off the challenges of Mathew Scholtz, the 16 year old South African and French 15 year old Florian Marino. It is Alex Kristiansson, the 15 year old Swede who completes the globe-wide front row.

"I am very happy with that," said Hiura with his characteristic grin. "I was not so happy that I crashed in the first qualifying when another rider suddenly slowed in front of me but I wasn't hurt and I really enjoyed the second session. The bike is working well and I can't wait for the race, I want to win."
