MotoGP fans get their GoGo on!
Hanging out at the Scooter-Girls, GoGo Gear booth during the MotoGP at Laguna Seca this past weekend gave me a firsthand view of consumer’s reactions to the concept of stylish riding gear for women.
As thousands of people walked by the booth, the mannequins wearing the GoGo Gear jackets got many glances. Of those that looked, quite a few people walked up to the jackets and felt the shoulders and elbows in almost disbelief that they were, in fact, full armored riding jackets. I watched as women walked in to try the jackets on as their men critiqued and complimented one style against the next. Every time I walked in, an excited and satisfied customer was walking out with a GoGo Gear jacket under their arm.
GoGo Gear is still up against the age-old way of thinking that riding jackets must look like riding jackets in order to be riding jackets. It is the same with any big change market wide – it takes a little while for people to accept something new in a market that has remained basically unchanged for way too many years. If it looks fashionable and feminine, how can it provide the same amount of protection as the big, bulky jackets that have been around for years? I personally think it’s a matter of when, not if. The jackets have the same material and armor of every jacket that is currently in my riding gear closet, they are just shaped differently to cater to women’s lifestyle and preferences.
