Melissa’s doctor, Dr. Ting, performed surgery yesterday, placing a rod in her tibia; the fracture in her fibula did not require a rod and will heal on its own.
The surgery went well and her husband, Josh Hayes, reported, “Surgery went good and quick, and everything looks good. No tears from my woman, she's one tough cookie!”
She was up and corresponding with me at 1:30 am while Josh slept beside her. “Josh is being great. He's asleep in hospital bed next to me,” she said. She even said that she had to fake sleep, “so the poor guy would let himself rest!”
As far as when she will be getting back on the bike, she said, “I'm going to be on crutches a while, but there is still hope that I will make my next 250 race! I'm definitely going to miss the New Jersey AMA round, which is a bummer, but there is a USGPRU race the following weekend in Mid-Ohio. I'm in the points race, so I'm trying very hard to make that.”
The race she will be missing is the 2009 AMA Pro Superbike Championships Weekend slated for September 4 – 6 at New Jersey Motorsports Park. Her doctor told her that as long as she stays off of the leg until then, and if she can take the pain, then she can race at the 2009 AMA Road Race Grand Championships, set for September 10-13, 2009 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.
Melissa is also scheduled to be a guest instructor for the Yamaha Champions Riding School at Miller Motorsports Park September 22 and 23, and she has no plans on missing that date either.
She’s being released from the hospital now to fly home for some rest and a little Xbox while she heals!
