Upon contacting Melissa Paris to see how she was after her accident yesterday during Sunday’s Daytona SportBike race at Virginia International Raceway, I was surprised to receive a reply from her right away. And of all places, the Dallas airport!
She’s one tough woman.
The accident happened shortly after the start of the race when one rider lost control and took six other bikes down with him. Melissa saw the accident occurring in front of her but couldn’t avoid it.
Melissa described her involvement: “I was trying to avoid a pile of bikes and thought I was going to make it when BAM! I just got smoked in the right leg by another rider. It was just one of those freak accidents.”
She is heading for surgery today for her fractured leg, but stated that it could have been worse had it not been for her boots. Melissa stated “My Daytona boots did their job and protected my ankle, but something had to give and I broke my tibia and fibula right at the boot. I knew right away it was broken.”
She said she is doing ok, but described, in detail, that her “fractured bones are at a 45 degree angle and the bones are just sliding back and forth, it's really gross because I keep feeling (and sometimes hearing) them pop back and forth.”
If that doesn’t make you shudder!
She continues to prove her determination and resiliency with returning to racing foremost on her mind. She signed off with the words, “I can't wait to get healing so I can get back to racing!”
Stay tuned for updates on Melissa Paris’ surgery and healing progress. All the staff at AllAboutBikes.com wish her a very speedy recovery!
