Jonathan Rea took his second pole position of the season today, beating out Carlos Checa, Eugene Laverty, and Marco Melandri.
Rea set a 1'41.712 lap around the Portimao track, beating the newly crowned champion by .2 seconds and shaving .3 seconds off of the existing record. Laverty finished third while Melandri took the final spot on the front row, a half second off of the pace.
Sylvain Guintoli and Jakum Smrz took the fifth and sixth place spots aboard their Ducatis, ahead of Joan Lascorz and Noriyuki Haga.
Max Biaggi, who is returning to racing for the first time since breaking his foot three rounds ago. It is the first time that Biaggi has missed the cut since the knockout format was introduced
