Checa, Biaggi, and Melandri Prepare for Battle at Silverstone

silverstone_trackThroughout the 2011 World Superbike season, there have been three names consistently toward the top of the standings. Carlos Checa, Max Biaggi, and Marco Melandri have been fighting for race wins at every event so far this year, and the top trio in the World Superbike series will be doing the same this weekend.

Carlos Checa leads the series with 293 points, but the Ducati rider has been kept from the top spot for the last two rounds, where Max Biaggi and Marco Melandri split up four wins amongst themselves.

Checa could also be looking at a difficult weekend at Silverstone, as the long straights are not favorable for his Ducati.

"I really like the Silverstone track, despite the straights where we'll suffer a little," said Checa.

Biaggi may also struggle this weekend, as the Aprilia rider has never found victory at Silverstone.

Marco Melandri will be riding his R1 for the first time on the newly paved track, but he is optimistic about his chances this weekend.

"Silverstone is a track that I adore," Melandri said. "I really like the fast bits. It's very long and difficult and I am sure that we'll offer two great races to all Superbike fans."

All three of the top riders in the WSBK will have to fight off an onslaught of British riders, who always seem to find a few extra tenths at Silverstone.

Last year we had all British podiums at both World Superbike races. The British field will be a little thinner this year, however, as Jonathan Rea is still out of action due to an injury.
