Melandri Takes The Win at Aragon

marco_melandri_winsMarco Melandri took his second win of the 2011 World Superbike season today at Aragon. Max Biaggi led the way around the Spanish circuit, but a slip up in the closing laps opened the door for Melandri to take the win.

Biaggi overtook Melandri, who was in the pole position, at the beginning of the race and led until there were four laps remaining. Melandri kept himself close to the leader, but never really made a move to pass. When Biaggi over-braked going into a corner on the fourth lap, Melandri was able to slip by on the inside to take the lead.

Once Melandri had the lead, he was able to open up a gap between himself and Biaggi. Melandri would cross the line with 1.4 seconds ahead of the 2010 World Superbike champion.

Leon Camier took the final pole position ahead of Eugene Laverty and Tom Sykes.

Carlos Checa was on his way to a possible podium finish, but the Althea Ducati rider fell on lap 8. Checa had just put in the fastest lap of the day and was working to keep up with the leaders. Checa pushed a little too hard and will walk away from race 1 without any points.
