The grid is cleared, the trucks are packed up, and the World Superbike and AMA Pro Racing riders are on their way to the next event. Blake Young and Carlos Checa will be smiling on their travels as both riders had a fantastic weekend at MMP.
The Utah track may have cemented its place as Carlos Checa’s favorite track this weekend, as the Althea Ducati rider was able to pull of another outstanding double. Checa did the double at MMP in 2008 and repeated the feat this year. It is also Checa’s second double of the year. The Ducati rider has won 6 of the 10 races so far this season and extended his lead to 61 points.
Checa won both races by a big margin, and was never really challenged at the front. In race 1, Checa’s victory was made easier by the fact that Max Biaggi, Jonathan Rea, Ruben Xaus, and Michel Fabrizio all crashed out of contention. Checa actually crashed too, but his trip to the mud was during a failed celebration after he claimed victory. (You can read about World Superbike Race 1 here.)
In race two, the majority of the World Superbike grid was able to keep their bikes on two wheels, but still, no one was able to challenge Checa. Checa jumped off the line and claimed a second lead by the end of the first lap. Checa would continue to grow his lead to as much as 8 seconds before cruising to an easy victory. In the AMA Superbike race, there was no clear winner until the final stretch of the race. Blake Young and Josh Hayes went back and forth throughout the race, swapping the lead at least 10 times. Hayes got the points for most laps led, but Young led on the lap that mattered and took home his third win of the season. (You can read more about the AMA Superbike race here.)
