The World Superbike series is one of the most exciting racing series in the world, and the coverage continues to get better. Infront Italia and the World SBK tested out some on-board cameras at the Portimao testing session last week. The cameras will make their official debut at Donnington, which is the second round of the World Superbike series.
"We'll be using technology developed by Infront Italia," declared Fabrizio Civirani, SBK Executive TV Producer and TV director. "We presented a series of safety and visibility guidelines that have been developed with the use of technology from some of the most advanced companies in this sector. The engineering aspects were then developed within Infront, with the collaboration of experts from this sector and with Milan Polytechnic."
8 bikes will be outfitted with the cameras during the 2011 season. The two mini cameras will be fitted onto 7 bikes from the top 10 riders. The other camera will be shuffled around between different teams, manufacturers, and bikes.
"We are really pleased with the test," Civirani said. "The results were better than expected. We noted the absence of vibrations and radio interference. Now we have to try with all the TV cameras together."
The cameras, which weigh just 1.2 kilograms, will give a unique viewing experience for fans across the world. But the World Superbike isn't going to stop there. They hope that they will be able to develop more advanced cameras to give an even better viewing experience.
"With the Polytechnic we're looking at the possibility of building and developing even more advanced TV cameras that give better visibility."
