Marco Melandri gave his racing fans a scare with ominous messages about his shoulder surgery. But Yamaha has just released a press release saying that Melandri's surgery was "minor and successful," and that he is expected to be completely healthy for the start of the 2011 World Superbike season.
Yamaha says that Melandri chose to have "clean-up" surgery to make sure that he didn't injure his shoulder further before the start of the World Superbike season. Melandri should have more than enough time to recover before the start of the WSBK season on February 27th at Phillip Island.
The surgery was performed by Dr Giuseppe Porcellini, the same specialist who worked on the shoulder of Valentino Rossi. Porcellini said that there was no damage to the ligaments, and was therefore a rather straightforward procedure.
Melandri will be using a brace for the next two weeks, which will limit his training slightly during January. Once the brace comes off, however, Melandri is expected to be at 100%, and should be ready to compete without question come the start of the season.
