Carlos Checa was clearly the fastest on the Miller Motorsports Park track today, building his lead to as much as three seconds ahead of Max Biaggi. But with just two laps to go in the first race for the World Superbike, a mechanical malfunction sent Checa coasting to the sidelines.
Biaggi, who had been in second for most of the day, cruised to an easy first place finish, nearly 5 seconds ahead of Leon Haslam. Haslam had a poor start today, but managed to fight his way onto the podium. Biaggi's first place finish cuts the distance to season leader Leon Haslam by five points.
Noriyuki Haga got his best finish of the season since winning in Spain with a podium finish at Miller Motorsports park, and Leon Camier, who ran in third for most of the day, managed to hold onto a fourth place finish ahead of Troy Corser.
Roger Hayden, the lone American, took 16th place at Miller Motorsports Park during the first race for the World Superbike.
