Michel Fabrizio set the fastest lap of the first qualifying session early in the day at Kyalami. The World Superbike rider set a time of 1:38.777 within the first five minutes of the opening qualifying session, and then set his winning lap of 138.477 shortly after. Cal Crutchlow came the closest to beating Fabrizio’s early time, but Crutchlow fell .05 seconds short. Jonathan Rea also had a good opening session, finishing just two tenths behind Fabrizio.
Troy Corser was quiet during the free practice session, but managed to pull his BMW into fourth. Season leader Leon Haslam took fifth.
Max Biaggi, who is coming off of his second double of the season, finished in 8th place today, behind Carlos Checa and Jakub Smrz.
Fabrizio’s teammate, Noriyuki Haga, finished more than a second behind Fabrizio with a 13th place finish.
