Two Wins for Rea at Assen

wsbk_rea_assen_2Jonathan Rea won his first race of the 2010 World Superbike season today at Assen, and then he won his second. Rea won his first ever World Superbike double in front of his Ten Kate Honda team’s home crowd.

It was a tight race throughout, but in the end it came down to Leon Haslam and Rea. With five laps to go, Haslam and Rea switched positions for the lead three times, before Rea finally made a move and pulled away. Rea won his second race of the day by 1.9 seconds.

Haslam’s second place finish was a much needed improvement from his 11th place finish in race one. Despite his poor showing in the first race, Haslam improves his lead on the overall leader board. The 2010 WSBK leader is now 20 points ahead of Max Biaggi, who had a 6th place finish in race one and a fourth place finish in race two.

Rea’s double at Assen moves him up on the leader board from fifth place into third, passing up Carlos Checa, and Noriyuki Haga. Haga also drops below James Toseland in the overall standings. Toseland managed a second place finish at race one, and his third place finish in race two completed the second all British podium at Assen.

Max Biaggi was the next across the finish line in fourth, maintaining his second place position on the scoreboard, 20 points behind Haslam and 18 ahead of Rea. Troy Corser closes up the top five.
