Haga Hits Back at Valencia

wsbk_haga_valenciaNitro Noriyuki Haga crossed the finish line first today to give himself his first World Superbike win of the season and his 42nd in his career.

The victory came after a huge crash on lap three that caused the red flags to come down. Simon Andrews and Vittorio Iannuzzo collided on the straight away, sending both riders hurdling to the ground. The race was halted, as both riders sought medical attention. Andrews suffered the worst of it with minor injuries to his left ankle and foot.

The two part aggregated race began again, with Carlos Checa ahead on the timesheets. As the racers crossed the finish line, Haga had a comfortable lead in front of Max Biaggi and Carlos Checa. But as the times from the first part of the aggregated race were added up, Haga’s lead was cut down to just .025 seconds.

Checa moved up in front of Biaggi, putting two Ducati’s at the top of the podium, and Biaggi ended up in third, just two tenths behind the leader. haga_valencia_2

There was a ten second gap between the top three riders and the fourth place finisher, Leon Haslam. Haslam still holds onto first place on the leader board with 123 points. Biaggi and Checa continue to close the gap with 105 and 80 point totals, and Haga is just one point behind with 79.

Jonathan Rea, who was in second place when the red flags were waved, dropped down to fifth place behind Haslam.

Haga’s race two win continues a tradition of race victories at Valencia, as the veteran rider now has 8 wins total on the Ricardo Tormo track. He won the double last year, and puts himself back into contention with today’s win. Haga’s teammate, Michel Fabrizio, had a disastrous day in Spain.

After a strong start to the WSBK season, Fabrizio has fallen in the rankings. A crash in race one, and mechanical problems in race two, made the Ducati rider retire in both races, dropping him down to 8th in the overall standings.
