Hopkins Takes Points Lead, Has Surgery After Donington

hopkins_injuryWith two rounds remaining in the British Superbike series, John Hopkins has the momentum. Unfortunately, Hopkins also has a broken finger that recently required a second surgery.

Hopkins suffered multiple fractures to his right hand while he was riding as a wildcard entry in the MotoGP at BRNO in August. The injury forced Hopkins to miss the Cadwell Park round, but the American returned last weekend in dramatic fashion to take both wins at Donington Park.

"There was a lot of pain in my fingers at Donington Park, and I knew it wasn't right and in fact I was very worried I'd aggravated the injury. So I rushed back to see my surgeon on the Monday," Hopkins said.

Hopkins had a second surgery on his hand to make sure that he would be ready for the final two rounds of the British Superbike Championship. But Hopkins will only have a few days to recover, as the British Superbike series continues this weekend at Silverstone.

"The x-rays showed that my middle finger wasn't locating properly in the second knuckle. Fortunately the bone area that had previously been crushed was now nicely healed and so my surgeon was able to put in screws and plates so as to stabilize the finger," Hopkins said.

"I could feel straight away that the finger was much stronger and it's improved every day since. I'm now very confident that I'll be able to ride at near-enough 100% at Silverstone next weekend."
