Sam Lowes won the Race of the Year at Mallory Park this weekend, bringing his Honda CBR600RR across the line ahead of 1000cc Superstock and Superbikes competitors. Lowes was followed across the checkers by fellow Bogdanka PTR Honda rider James Ellison.
“I have really enjoyed racing at Mallory Park,” Lowes said. “It has been a lot of fun and I hope the crowd enjoyed the race.”
The race was red flagged on the second lap due to a crash involving pole sitter John Ingram and Christian Iddon. Both riders were fine and were able to restart the race. On the restart, Ellison took the lead, but Lowes was hot on his trail.
Lowes would eventually pass Ellison, taking the Supersport lap record in the process.
“I got my head down once I got past James and knew he would push me all the way,” Lowes said. “The hot temperature meant there was very little grip so the outright lap record was always going to be difficult, but I am glad to take the Supersport lap record and my first win of the season. Now it is back to the World Supersport Championship and I want to win there next."
Billy McConnell took the final spot on the podium aboard a Triumph Daytona 675.
Lowes’ name will be added to the Race of the Year trophy, which already includes legendary riders like Giacomo Agostini and Barry Sheene, as well as current riders like Cal Crutchlow and Tom Sykes.
