2010 British Superbike Preview: The Showdown Begins at Croft

bsb_showdownThe 2010 MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship enters the final showdown this weekend, where the top six riders will compete over three rounds for the BSB Championship.

Season points no longer matter as we enter into the showdown, but the title fighters will be able to carry over podium credits. The BSB has given each rider a base of 500 points, and their podium credits have been added on top of that.

Here are the current British Superbike standings for the final 6.

1 Ryuichi Kiyonari  HM Plant Honda  525
2 Tommy Hill  Worx Suzuki  525
3 Joshua Brookes  HM Plant Honda  524
4 Michael Rutter  Riders Ducati  510
5 Michael Laverty  Relentless Suzuki  509
6 Alastair Seeley  Relentless Suzuki  505

Kiyonari is in good position to work on his third BSB championship title. Kiyo won consecutive titles in 2006 and 2007, and looks like he could be on to championship number three.

But he'll have stiff competition from Tommy Hill. Hill has been the favorite throughout the 2010 BSB season, but a poor showing at Mallory Park allowed riders like Kiyonari and Brookes to catch up.

The new scoring system in the final showdown gives a big boost to the bottom three riders, who are all now within one race of the top title contenders. Kiyonari, Hill, and Brookes will have added pressure this weekend at Croft, as all riders are entering the showdown on a near even plane.

There will be two races at Croft, followed by an event at Silverstone before the championship is decided at Oulton Park on November 10th.
