Eugene Laverty waited until the final minutes to take the provisional pole at the first qualifying session in the World Supersport. Laverty claimed the top spot with a 1:41’363 lap around the Kyalami track, as a red flag came down with just four minutes left to go.
When the race restarted, Matthieu Lagrive gave a fantastic final effort to move up into second place, less than a tenth of a second behind Laverty. Lagrive pulled ahead of Sofuoglu, who slid back into third place in the final minute.
Laverty is closing in on Sofuoglu and Joan Lascroz. He claimed his third race win at the last race in Monza, and is setting himself up to be competitive at Kyalami.
Lascorz finished fifth today during the first qualifying session at Kyalami, a half a second behind Michele Pirro.
