Eugene Laverty was the talk of the World Supersport championships after he won the first round of the season at Phillip Island by more than four seconds. Since then, Laverty has missed the podium at both Valencia and Portimao, dropping him down to third place in the overall standings. Laverty’s win today in Assen, his second win at the Dutch track in two years, reestablishes him as a tough contender for the WSS title. Laverty cuts Joan Lascorz’s lead down by five, and shortens the gap to second place rider Kenan Sofouglu by nine.
A wide turn on lap 17 forced Lascorz to lose valuable seconds. But the determined Irishman fought his way back into contention and managed to edge out Sofuoglu by two tenths of a second for the second place finish.
Behind the top three there was a twenty second gap until the next rider came across the finish line. Chaz Davies rode into fourth place, 23 seconds behind Laverty, and just ahead of his BE1 Racing teammate Mathieu Lagrive.
Robin Harms ran a good race to finish sixth, and the young buck Gino Rea took his fourth consecutive top ten finish in seventh place.
