World Supersport: Laverty Wins Unchallenged

Eugene Laverty racing at Phillip Island during World SupersportAfter a record-breaking day that gave Joan Lascorz the top spot on the grid and the best time on the track, the winner of the first race of the World Supersport season seemed almost pre-determined.

But Eugene Laverty, who had an unimpressive time during free practice and the qualifying rounds, dominated race one and finished four seconds ahead of Lascorz for his fifth WSS career victory.
Laverty’s win was even more impressive because his early lead was wiped clean by a red flag on lap three. Laverty was un-phased, and when the race re-started he found himself again in front of the pack.

The fight for second was a four-way battle for most of the race. Lascorz, Michele Piro, Kenan Sofouglu, and Katsuaki Fujiwara continually swapped positions until Fujiwara dropped his Kawasaki and Piro had to retire due to mechanical problems.

The second place battle came down to Lascorz and Sofouglu, who were both favorites to win the race. Lascorz managed to hang on to lead as the two passed the checkered flag.

David Solomon raced to a career-best fourth place ahead of veteran rider Fabien Foret.
