Cal Crutchlow's Portimao Session Hot

World Supersport: Crutchlow Hits WSS Running

After a promising test at Portimao last year Yamaha World Supersport Team rider Cal Crutchlow was only 0.050 seconds away from setting the best time at the most recent Portimao session.

Not bad for a rider who had to jump into the competitive shark pool of World Supersport racing after two seasons of BSB competition, on Suzuki and then Honda machinery. On the other hand, maybe it is no surprise as Cal is already a podium finisher at World Superbike level, after his brilliant wet weather second place at Donington last year.

Crutchlow had much previous 600cc experience to draw on when making the move to WSS this year, having been the British Supersport Champion in 2006, riding a Northpoint Ekerold Honda.

He has, in fact, raced in WSS three times before, in 2005 and 2006, with a best result of fifth at Brands Hatch in 2006.

Having made a successful jump from Supersport to Superbike in the UK scene, Crutchlow knows that a move to the 600s on the world scene is a good way to get noticed, particularly when that move takes place with full factory machinery and support, and options for the future.

Said the native of Coventry, in the English Midlands "Yamaha offered me a good enough WSS contract to come here, and I also had other Superbike offers I would have signed rather than staying in Britain. But the offer of going racing for a manufacturer that wanted me to ride for them, on not just a one-year deal, took my fancy. So that's what I chose to do, and I signed for the official Yamaha Supersport team. We will see where it goes from there."
