Jake Gagne took the race one win at the Red Bull Rookies Cup from the pole position today at the Sachsenring track. Gagne, 16, beat out 14-year old Brad Binder and 16-year old Danny Kent for the win. Like previous Rookie Cup races, the winner was determined at the final turn. 10 riders were neck and neck going into the final lap, but Gagne got the best of them coming around the final corner.
“I was just in the group for most of the race and watching what the other guys were doing. With about 3 laps to go I got to the front and tried to get away," said Gagne. "I knew that Brad (Binder) had gone with me but over the last few corners I knew I was pretty strong and I braked pretty deep so I didn't think he'd be able to get by.”
Gagne's win today puts him within one point of Daniel Ruiz. Ruiz was in first place going into today's race, but dropped down to second behind Danny Kent. The top three riders are all within 7 points of each other.
