The Supertwins are returning to the Isle of Man. The 2012 TT race program will include a new lightweight class for Supertwin specification machines.
The lightweight race will feature 650cc twin cylinder four stroke motorcycles, which are regularly ridden by TT favorites like Ryan Farquhar, Adrian Archibald, Daniel Kneen, John Burrows and Ian Lougher.
The Isle of Man Government Department of Economic Development said that points scored during the lightweight race will not go toward the solo TT championship, but the racers will be fighting over a 25,000 pound prize.
"Interest is growing in the Supertwin class and a large number of competitors as well as leading manufacturers Kawasaki and Suzuki have already expressed their backing for the race," said Paul Phillips, the TT and Motorsport Development Manager. "We feel it is the right time to introduce the Supertwins machines to the TT programme and their inclusion will not only benefit the TT, but is likely to speed up the growth in the class at national level, and at the other International Road Races."
Race organizers are currently consulting with teams, riders, and manufacturers, to draw up the technical regulations for the new class.
