The Isle of Man TT Continues to Bring in Big Names Hot

Isle of Man TTThe 2010 Isle of Man TT has attracted some of the biggest motorcycle manufacturers in the world. Last week, KTM announced that they will make their debut at the 2010 IOM, and now, established road-racing manufacturer BMW has announced that they will be competing in this years IOM competition.

“It’s really exciting to see the return of such a prestigious marque to the Isle of Man TT,” said Martyn Quayle, the Tourism and Leisure Minister of IOM. “Their involvement in the 2010 races is a great boost to an already strong list of manufacturers – more evidence that the TT is going from strength to strength.”

BMW first competed in the TT way back in 1937. They have won over 30 races at the TT, but they haven’t won, or competed, in a race since the late 1970s.  The German manufacturer joins the TT after a successful run during last years World Superbike Championships.

BMW will be running their S1000RR in both the Superbike and the Senior TT races. Germany’s Rico Penzkofer will be in the saddle of the S1000RR, and is expected to be a serious contender.

Penzkofer came in fifth at last year’s Macau Grand Prix, had an impressive debut at the TT last year in the Supersport category, and has won the World Endurance Championship.

“To be representing BMW on their return to the TT is a tremendous honor for me and after my debut last year I can’t wait to return to the Mountain Course,” said Penzkofer. “Riding the Superbike will obviously present a new challenge, but the bike is superb and that, combined with my own improved knowledge of the course, should see us able to make a good impression.”
