With more than a decade of AMA racing under his belt, Josh Hayes is one of the most recognizable faces on the AMA grid. Hayes has earned four AMA championships in his career so far, including last year’s Superbike championship.
Josh Hayes has been racing in the AMA since 1998, and in his time as a professional motorcycle racer in the AMA Pro Racing series, he's amassed four national championships. One in the Superstock class, two in Formula Xtreme, and his most recent, the 2010 AMA Superbike Championship.
But before Hayes was an AMA champion, the Gulfport, Mississippi native found success on the amateur level. Hayes started racing in 1994 on a self-tuned Honda CBR600F2. Hayes would win three national novice championships before turning pro in 1996. His first professional racing year yielded another championship when Hayes found himself on top of the WERA National Endurance Series Heavyweight Superstock Championship.
Hayes followed that up with a WERA National Endurance Championships and was crowned the 1100 Suzuki Cup Champion in 1997.
Hayes joined the AMA in 1998, but continued to ride, and win, non-AMA events like the USA 103 HP, the Suzuki Cup 600, and the WERA National 600 Superstock Championship.
Hayes had proven himself at all types of national events, but it wasn't until 2003 that he scored his first AMA championship. Hayes won at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and Mid-Ohio in 2003 on his way to his first AMA Superstock championship.
Hayes would try his hand in the Superbike series the following year, and finished in a respectable 8th place. Hayes had similar results in 2005 before deciding to concentrate on the Formula Xtreme class. Hayes would win back to back championships in 2006 and 2007 before Jake Zemke took the title from him in 2008.
Hayes moved back up to the Superbike class in 2009, and was one of the only riders to challenge the legendary Mat Mladin.
In 2010 Hayes found his greatest success. Hayes finished on the podium for 13 consecutive races. He took 7 wins, and eventually, the 2010 AMA Superbike title.
