The Moto 3 qualifying practice at Indianapolis started at 1pm this afternoon and Sandro Cortese, riding the Red Bull KTM Ajo machine, came into the qualifying practice with a time of 1.48.514 — the fastest practice lap from the morning’s sessions.
After twelve minutes into qualifying, #55 Hector Faubel on the Mapfre Aspar Team M high sided coming onto the front straight from turn 16. The race was red-flagged while Faubel was transported by ambulance away from what looked like a nasty accident. We're still waiting on news of his condition and prognosis.
With 26 minutes left on the clock, #26 Adrian Martin on the JHK Laglisse machine had #8 Jack Miller and his Caretta Technology slide directly in front and block his line as he went into the right hand corner of turn 9. Martin then slid straight into Miller's path.
At this point the pack behind them began to quickly separate in order to avoid Martin and Miller as they went down. Fortunately Martin was able to mount his bike again to carry on, but he still had to leave on the next lap.
With 19 minutes left for qualifying, Danny Kent's Red Bull KTM Ajo was on the top of the table with a 1.48.703, Sandro Cortese's Red Bull KTM Ajo was in second with 1.48.950, and Luis Salom's RW Racing GP was 3rd with a time of 1.48.990.
With 2 minutes of qualifying left to go, though, Cortese seized the top spot with a 1.48.545 and stayed there. The rest of the grid's front row was Danny Kent on the other Red Bull KTM with a time of 1.48.628 and then Maverick Vinales on the Blusens Avintia with a time of 1.48.643.
