There are three rounds left in the 2011 MotoGP season but the championship could end this weekend. If Casey Stoner can gain a 50 point advantage over Jorge Lorenzo at the end of the Phillip Island GP, Stoner will be crowned the 2011 champion. Stoner currently has a 40 point lead.
Which means that Stoner will not only need a good finish this weekend, he'll also need Jorge Lorenzo to falter. If Stoner wins and Jorge Lorenzo fails to reach the podium, Stoner will win the championship. If Jorge Lorenzo crashes out of the race, Stoner can finish as low as sixth and secure the title.
The Repsol Honda rider will be racing in front of his home Australian crowd at a circuit that has been good to him in the past. Stoner has won his last four races in Australia while Jorge Lorenzo has never taken a win at Phillip Island.
And if Stoner needs any more motivation, he'll be celebrating his 26th birthday on race day.
