Jorge Lorenzo took his second win of the 2011 MotoGP season today at Mugello, beating out Andrea Dovizioso and season leader Casey Stoner. Lorenzo is now just 19 points behind Stoner in the overall standings.
Stoner, who took the pole position yesterday with a record breaking lap, looked like he was going to run away with his 5th win of the season. Stoner shot off the line and was eventually able to build up a two second lead.
But with nine laps to go, Lorenzo started to reel Stoner back in. Lorenzo made his pass with 6 laps remaining in the MotoGP race, and was able to hold onto the lead until he crossed the checkers to claim his second win of the season.
Stoner would lose another place to his teammate Andrea Dovizioso on the final lap.
Ben Spies and Marco Simoncelli battled for the fourth place spot. The two swapped positions throughout the race, but Spies was able to get the upper hand on the final lap.
Valentino Rossi was able to claim the sixth place spot ahead of Hector Barbera.
