How much would you pay for a piece of MotoGP memorabilia? In just 4 hours, the MotoGP Day of Champions auction raised more than $100,000 at Silverstone this weekend. The money will go toward the Rider’s For Health Foundation.
Fans bid on unique MotoGP experiences, like the chance to follow a MotoGP photographer around the inside of the track, as well as MotoGP memorabilia, like a pair of riding boots worn by Ben Spies.
Here are some of the biggest money raisers.
- Leathers worn by Colin Edwards - $5300
- Various boots worn by Hector Barbara, Ben Spies, Jorge Lorenzo, Marco Simoncelli, Karel Abraham, Toni Elias, Hiroshi Aoyama and Cal Crutchlow - $6300
- Suzuki's MotoGP VIP package, which included a lap around Silverstone with Alvaro Bautista - $5000
- A photo with Valentino Rossi that will be turned into a painting - $7200
“This sport means so much to me, this day means so much to me, and that is because of the fans,"said Randy Mamola, who co-founded Riders for Health. "We change millions of people’s lives and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
The Rider’s For Health Foundation is the official charity of the MotoGP. Rider’s For Health works with people in Africa to make sure that everyone can get medical treatment.
Here is the mission statement from Rider’s For Health:
“Riders for Health’s vision is of a world in which the poor do not suffer and die for lack of access to health care and other vital services simply because they are isolated by distance or terrain.
The MotoGP Auction was just one aspect of the Day of Champions, which raised a total of $320,000.
