It was a cold, wet morning in the UK as the MotoGP riders took to the track for the first day of free practice. Casey Stoner didn’t seem to mind the conditions, however, as he led both free practice sessions, setting a 2’03.748 at the Silverstone track.
The morning session was dry, but the Silverstone track was hit with rain during FP2. Stoner lost 12 seconds during the second free practice sessions under wet conditions, but still managed to top the timesheets.
Marco Simoncelli was the second fastest bike in both sessions. Simoncelli was the only rider who finished within a second of Stoner’s pace in both sessions.
Jorge Lorenzo, who took third in FP1, finished more than a second behind the pacesetter. Lorenzo would drop down to fifth in FP2, three seconds behind Stoner.
Nicky Hayden had a solid run today, claiming fourth in the first free practice session. Hayden was also able to keep up his speed in the wet and claimed third in FP2.
Hayden’s teammate Valentino Rossi didn’t fare as well. Rossi was 12th on a dry track in the morning. He was able to better his position in the afternoon, but still finished more than 3.5 seconds behind Stoner.
