KTM to Make GP Road Racing Return in 2012

ktm_moto3When Moto3 racing debuts next year, KTM will be there on the grid. KTM will be making its GP Road Racing return in 2012 to compete in the Moto3 category.

KTM has partnered with Kalex Engineering to build a 100% in-house Moto3 racing machine for the 2012 racing season. Kalex Engineering, which currently has a strong presence in the Moto2 series, will be working with KTM engineer Wolfgang Felber to make KTM a top contender in Moto3 next year.

“We approach our entry into the Moto3 class with confidence,” said  Pit Beirer, Head of KTM Motorsports. “Our own plans are right on schedule for a racing bike completely developed in Mattighofen, while at the same time we have also found the best possible partner, who will present our engine at a very high and professional level. Kalex Engineering is well positioned for this in every way and just like KTM is highly motivated to develop a bike capable of winning in the new Moto3 category.”

A press release from KTM says that development for the new motorcycle is right on schedule. KTM hasn’t made any announcements about who will be riding the new Moto3 machine, but a KTM and Kalex partnership is likely to attract some talented riders.

“The exclusive partnership with KTM as supplier of engines is a big step forward for us,” said Alex Baumgärtel, Managing Director Kalex Engineering.  “As we already have a good insight into the construction of the new KTM Moto3 engine we feel certain that we have the best basis for the drive system for our own racing motorcycle. With this combination we can continue to build on the success we have enjoyed in the Moto2 class. We are very much looking forward to the development and the 2012 season.
