Lorenzo's Record Breaking Season So Far Hot

motogp_lorenzo_m1Jorge Lorenzo has had a spectacular MotoGP season so far this year. He has a 77 point lead heading into the 11th  round of the 2010 MotoGP, and looks like he is on his way to his first premier class World Champioinship. But Lorenzo has also accomplished a few other things this year.

His win last round at BRNO, makes him only the third rider in MotoGP history to finish in first or second in the first ten races of the season. In the 62 year history of the MotoGP, only Giacomo Agostini, riding an MV Agusta, and Mick Doohan, Riding a Honda, have done the same.

Even more impressive, 7 of those 10 finishes were race wins. Lorenzo joins an elite club of racers who have won 7 or more premier class races in the first ten rounds. Only Mick Doohan, Valentino Rossi, Giacomo Agostini, Mike Hailwood, Gary Hocking, and John Surtees have won 7 or more premier class races in the first 10 rounds.

Lorenzo also set a record for the most wins by a Spanish rider during a MotoGP season. Lorenzo has won 7 races so far this year, and with 8 more to races to go, he could definitely add to that number. Lorenzo took his 7th win at BRNO, surpassing Alex Criville, who won six times in 1999.motogp_lorenzo_laguna

He also achieved his 33rd GP victory at BRNO, tying his rival Dani Pedrosa, and becoming the Spanish rider with the third most wins in history. Lorenzo has a long way to go to match Angel Nieto's record of 90 GP wins, but is only four behind Jorge Martinez.

Including last years podium finish at Valencia, Lorenzo currently has 11 consecutive podium finishes. There are still 8 more races to go in the 2010 MotoGP season, giving Lorenzo the chance to not only win his first World Championship, but to also set some more records in the process.
