Lorenzo Extends Lead With 5th MotoGP Win

motogp_lorenzo_5thwinJorge Lorenzo has won his fifth race of the 2010 MotoGP today at Catalunya, extending his lead to 52 points. It is the third consecutive time that Lorenzo has won a race from the pole position. The last Yamaha rider to do that was Eddie Lawson in 1986. Dani Pedrosa and Casey Stoner completed the podium.

Lorenzo was challenged early by Andrea Dovizioso. Dovizioso and the season leader swapped the number one spot early on, but Lorenzo was able to regain the advantage. On lap 14, Dovizioso tried again to take the lead, but ended up on the pavement.

With Dovizioso out of the picture, Lorenzo had a 5.5 second lead over Stoner and Perosa. The lead was too big, and no one came close to challenging Lorenzo at the end. The Fiat Yamaha rider ended  up crossing the finish line 4.754 seconds ahead of Pedrosa.

Lorenzo now leads the MotoGP championship with 165 points. Pedrosa sits on 113 in second, while Dovizioso maintained his 3rd place spot with 91 points.
