Less than a week ago, Jorge Lorenzo took his third MotoGP win of the season. Lorenzo will have to postpone the celebration, however, as the MotoGP riders get ready for the 80th DutchTT at Assen this weekend.
With Valentino Rossi out of the picture, Jorge Lorenzo is beginning to extend his lead over the rest of the pack. Lorenzo currently has a 37 point lead over Andrea Dovizioso. Lorenzo has won at Assen in the 125 and 250 class, and will be seeking his first MotoGP win at the legendary track.
“Next we arrive at Assen, my favorite track,” said Lorenzo. “Once again we're aiming for the podium. The team is working very well together and now we will just concentrate on trying to improve the M1 even more; it's important to keep growing. I've won at Assen in 125 and 250 so I'd really like to try to win in MotoGP!"
The Repsol Honda team has two riders chasing Lorenzo. Andrea Dovizioso and Dani Pedrosa sit in second and third in the overall standings. The Repsol Honda team has a podium in each of the MotoGP races this year, and Dovizioso has claimed four podiums in the past five races.
Nicky Hayden sits in fifth, behind the injured Valentino Rossi, and is coming off of a successful fourth place finish at the British GP. Hayden has won at Assen before, back in 2006, and is confident about his chances this time around.
"Assen is a unique and special circuit and I have had some of my best races there. It has been changed a lot over the years – some sections are better and some are worse – but there are a lot of long sweeping corners and the grip is good so you can use it to generate speed. The best part of the track is the last ‘left-right’ switch, a place where you can make a decisive pass on the brakes if you get it right,” said Hayden.
