According to European news reports, MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi’s stepfather has apparently committed suicide.
Italian officials have ordered a post-mortem on Mauro Tecchi, who was found Friday lying on a bed at home in the central Italian town of Pesaro with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the ANSA news agency reported.
The 52-year-old allegedly placed a pillow on his chest before pulling the trigger of a 12-guage shotgun that was found near the body, reports said.
Tecchi was found Friday when Rossi’s mother, Stefania Palma arrived home after being out of town. Officials believe Tecchi, who married Palma in 2007, passed away on Tuesday or Wednesday.
The news came just before the Australian Moto GP race at Phillip Island in Sydney where Rossi qualified second. Rossi has an 18-point lead in the championship over Fiat Yamaha teammate Jorge Lorenzo.
