Yuki Takahashi was fastest on the dry and in the wet today during the first day of free practice in Estoril. Takahashi beat out Thomas Luthi during the cold morning session, and stayed out in front of the pack as the rain came down during FP2.
Takahashi, who is racing this weekend to honor his brother Koki Takahashi who died in a car accident earlier this week, set a 1’42.402 lap time. Takahashi, along with the rest of the Moto2 class, dropped about 10 seconds in the wet during FP2, but the young Japanese rider was still able to lead the session.
Thomas Luthi finished .011 seconds behind Takahashi during the first free practice session. Luthi, who has finished on the podium at both races so far, edged out the 125cc champion Marc Marquez by .05 seconds.
Championship leader Andrea Iannone finished in 9th, .5 seconds behind Takahashi.
During the first free practice session in Estoril, the Moto2 class demonstrated how tight the competition truly is. The top 16 riders finished within 1 second of the leader.
