Jorge Lorenzo may be sitting comfortable in the MotoGP World Championship right now, but I doubt he is ignoring the efforts of a determined Dani Pedrosa. In the Moto2 series, Toni Elias is in a very similar situation.
Elias currently leads the series by 67 points, and he is coming off of his third consecutive Moto2 win. If Elias can keep his bike on the podium for the next couple of rounds, he should be able to secure the Moto2 Championship.
But like Lorenzo, Elias knows the dangers of dropping his guard.
“At Misano I will try to continue the good work of recent races, especially because it would be great to get another strong result at the team’s home event,” Elias said. “Moto2 is a tough class, there are so many riders going fast that you can never relax, not even for one moment, so we have to keep focused and keep fighting because there are still a lot of races to go.”
Elias' closest competitor, Andrea Iannone, had a tough round at Indy last weekend. A crash in qualifying left Iannone on the 25th spot on the grid for the race. But Iannone showed what a competitor he is, and managed to climb back up for a 4th place finish.
Iannone has his eyes on Elias, but he also has some tough competition coming from behind. Thomas Luthi and Julian Simon are tied for third, just 11 points behind Iannone.
There are still 7 rounds left, including Misano, in the Moto2 Championships, and Elias' work is far from finished if he wants to win the Moto2 series. He's established himself as the leader of the series, and now will have to defend his position from the charging Moto2 pack.
