Shoya Tomizawa claims his first pole position of his career today at an extremely close race around the Jerez track. Tomizawa is the current leader in Moto2, with an opening round win at Qatar.
The winning lap was set on lap nine with 20 minutes remaining. The 1’44.372 lap was hotly contested, but no won could surpass the Japanese riders best time.
Julian Simon came the closest, falling short by just two thousandths of a second. Toni Elias came next, followed by Yuki Takahashi to complete the front row. The top four riders were separated by less than a tenth of a second.
Behind the front row, the times stayed viciously close. The top twenty riders were all within one second of each other.
Thomas Luthi claimed fifth place to start the second row. Stefan Bradl, Gabor Talmasci, and Sergio Gadea complete the second row.
