The 2012 Dakar rally lost two American riders today. Jonah Street withdrew halfway through the third stage due to a mechanical error and American Quinn Cody had to call it quits after a serious crash during today's stage.
Cody crashed shortly after passing Juan Pedrero. Pedrero stopped to assist the American as they waited for a helicopter to lift Cody to a nearby hospital.
Cody suffered a broken collar bone and a head injury but is not in serious condition.
Cody's team released a statement saying:
"American Quinn Cody, assisted after a fall by Juan Pedrero, soon met up with one of the medical helicopters, whose team diagnosed a suspected fracture of the collar bone and head injury. His condition is not alarming, but nevertheless he has had to withdraw from the race."
