The Dakar Rally By the Numbers Hot

The Dakar Rally is just a few days away. On the first day of the new year, riders from around the world will embark on two days of adventure through the Atacama Desert in South America. 

Here is a look at the Dakar Rally by the numbers.

9500 - This year's route includes more than 9,500 kilometers through South America. (5,900 miles.)

800 - Riders must navigate within 800 meters of waypoints during the Rally. In 2010 riders had to navigate within three kilometers.

500 - Riders will average more than 500 miles a day during the Dakar Rally this year. 

450 - The elite class of motorcycles will be limited to an engine size of 450cc.

430 - There will be 430 vehicles lining up at the starting line on January 1st. There were 362 vehicles in 2010.

183 - The motorcycle race will consist of 183 bikes, up from 151 in 2010.

64 - The number of motorcycle riders competing in their first Dakar.

51 - The Dakar is one of the most diverse races in the world and will feature riders of 51 different nationalities.

33 - This is the 33rd Dakar Rally. 

28 - Japan’s Yoshimasa Sugawara, 69, holds the record for the number of participations, with 28 consecutive Dakar rallies.

20 - The age of Rodrigo Andrès Caballero Alcayaga, the youngest motorcycle rider competing in this year's Dakar.

13 - There will be 13 women participating in this year's Dakar across all disciplines. There will also be 13 stages at this year's Dakar.

9 - Consecutive titles won by KTM.

6 - There will be 6 vehicles competing in the NJR challenge, which will put alternative fuels to the ultimate test.

5 - Consecutive titles won by either Marc Coma or Cyril Despres

3 - This is the 3rd Dakar Rally held in South America. 

1 - The 2011 Dakar Rally will start on 01/01/11 in Buenos Aires.
