Many riders participating in the Parts Canada Superbike Championship are setting themselves up for a winter of training, getting sponsorships and planning for the race bike which they will run in 2011. However, not all racers from the Great White North are thinking about next year just yet. Several riders from the series have been invited by the ULM (Union Latino-Americano Motovelocidad; represents Latin-American racers to the FIM) and sponsor Multemedia Acelerando to compete in the 2010 Latin American Championships to be held in The Dominican Republic during 13 – 14 November.
Team Canada is represented by Andrew Nelson, who placed second overall in the 2010 running of the Canadian Superbike series, Jean Francois Cyr, and Franklyn Dominguez, who both led the program and will fly the Dominican flag but will ride alongside his Canadian counterparts. Other Canadians venturing down south for the weekend’s festivities are Sylvain Dery, Brian Kamp, Joey McRae, Raymond Gauthier, Paul Hollister, Samantha Goyer and Vanessa Gareau-Dominguez (who is actually in second place in the Amateur class). Nations participating in addition to Canada and The Dominican Republic are Columbia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico and Venezuela.
The event is set up in a four race format, two races on Saturday and two races on Sunday (FIM World Superbike format) with the championship being decided based on aggregate points. The Autodromo Mobil 1 track in Santo Domingo will be the stage and the official title is the Campeonato Latinoamericano de Motovelocidad, brought to you by Multemedia Acelerando TV. And, Team Canada is participating with licensing handled by the Canadian Motorcycle Association.
The event will surely be entertaining. Seeing so many talented riders from so many countries in one place in one event is well worth the admission price. The Latin American Championships begin in just a few weeks – get yourself ready!
