The 33rd Dakar Rally is scheduled to take place in Argentina and Chile during 1- 16 January 2011 and the registration period is ending soon. However, in the bike and quad classes, the grid is all filled up – no more spaces available for any more riders. Just as in the race itself, the motorcycle-based teams were the fastest to get their forms filled out and submitted. The quad teams were right there with them and are all set too. All totaled up, 200 motorcycles and quad teams will line up at the start in Buenos Aries at the beginning of the new year.
Since applications are continuing to be submitted for these classes, those interested in running in them are being placed on a waiting list. Slots for the late-comers will be provided should any already registered teams have to withdraw.
In an interesting technological development, most of the motorcycle teams are planning to use 450cc (or smaller) engines in the Dakar. This is due to the new restriction rules on larger machines and the success of the Aprilia team last year – where Francisco “Chaleco” Lopez made the podium in his very first trip to the event. Even Dakar is changing with the times.
The competition will be very tough in 2011, so make sure you get your eyes on the Dakar Rally – you do not want to miss it!
