James Brauddus is not a rich man. He is a 54 year-old master mechanic that has dreamed of breaking the land speed record since he was a child. This August, Broaddus and his custom made motorcycle will get their chance.
The 1300cc custom-made bike was largely made from scratch.
“When you don’t have money, you learn to improvise, and you make your own parts,” Broaddus said. “My friends and I have personally made, welded and manufactured a large portion of the custom 79-cubic-inch (1300cc) competition motorcycle.”
The bike is built off of a Truett and Osborne chrome Moly drag racer with a Buell engine. From there, Broaddus and his team hand built the intake and exhaust systems, and all of the bodywork.
Just competing in the BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials on the Bonneville Salt Flats would be a feat in itself, but Broaddus is out to exceed expectations.
“It is said that a poor man cannot win in a rich man’s game. I am out to prove them wrong,” said Broaddus.
