The Supercross riders are heading to Oakland this weekend for the fourth round of the 2012 season. There have been three different winners at the first three events, but Ryan Dungey has been the only rider to keep his bike on the podium all season long. Dungey and KTM currently lead the series ahead of Chad Reed and defending champion Ryan Villopoto.
"It feels great to hold the red number plate as we head into the fourth round," Dungey said. "It's still early in the series, but it is definitely off to a good start for the Red Bull / KTM Team."
Dungey entered the season as a bit of an unknown. Dungey has proven himself on the Supercross track but this is his first year competing with KTM. Dungey and KTM have dispelled any doubts in the first three races of the season and could be hard to beat this year.
Defending champion Ryan Villopoto will do his best, however, to make sure he holds onto the number one plate for another year. Villopoto started the season with a win but missed the podium last weekend at Dodger Stadium.
"Fourth is all right, but isn't going to cut it," Villopoto said.
Chad Reed is currently tied for second with Villopoto, just four points behind Dungey.
Jake Weimer and James Stewart are currently tied for fourth another 15 points back. Stewart, who took a short break from racing last year, found his first podium of the season last weekend. Stewart started the season with two poor finishes but he looked good last weekend. We'll find out in Oakland if it was just a fluke.
The series lost a title contender lost weekend. Trey Canard, who just made his return to the Supercross circuit from an injury, broke his back last weekend during a scary accident. Canard is currently recovering from a successful surgery and could be out of the hospital by the end of the week.
Here's a look at what the Supercross riders will face this weekend.
