2011 Supercross Championship is Villopoto’s to Lose

ama_supercrossThe 2011 Supercross Championship is well within reach of Ryan Villopoto. If Villopoto can manage a top five finish this weekend in Las Vegas, he will become the 2011 AMA Supercross champion. The championship truly is Villopoto’s to lose.

But even though RV has a firm grasp on the championship, there are three other riders that still have a chance at winning.

Chad Reed - 9 points from the top.

Chad Reed needs to win the Las Vegas event if he wants a shot to win the title, and he needs RV to finish in 6th or worse. This season has seen a number of crashes and DNFs, so it isn’t unfathomable for Reed to win the title. If RV pushes himself to end the season with a win, he could falter and open the door for Reed.

Ryan Dungey - 12 points from the top.

Dungey is in a similar position to Reed. He needs Villopoto to finish ninth or worse in order to have a shot at the title. More than likely, though, Dungey will be fighting for second place with Chad Reed.

James Stewart - 23 points from the top.

Realistically, James Stewart doesn’t have a chance to win the title. Stewart would need to win the race, and then have the top three riders all finish out of the points. So unless there’s a massive pile up that involves Dungey, Reed, and Villopoto, Stewart doesn’t have a chance to win in 2011. It is possible, however, for Stewart to find the podium.
