Ryan Villopoto is one win away from capturing the 2011 Supercross championship. Villopoto won the penultimate race of the 2011 racing season, extending his lead to 9 points above Chad Reed.
Reed and Ryan Dungey both kept themselves in the title hunt with podium finishes, but James Stewart will need a miracle after his 10th place finish to win the championship. Dungey is now 12 points behind the leader, where as Stewart’s 10th place finish drops him back 23 points behind Villopoto.
"We have worked hard this year, and it is paying off,” said Villopoto. “It is a lot easier going into Vegas with a nine-point lead. Hopefully, I’’ll be standing on top of the box next weekend."
James Stewart led the race in Salt Lake for the first 10 laps, but the Yamaha rider took two spills on the dirt track, giving up his chance to win and challenge for the title.
With one race left, Villopoto doesn’t have to take the win in Las Vegas to be crowned the champion. If RV can manage a top five finish he’ll be crowned the 2011 AMA Supercross champion.
