James Stewart has had an up and down season. After suffering his longest losing streak in his career, Stewart scored back to-back-wins at St. Louis and Seattle, and is now just 9 points behind the season leader, Ryan Villopoto.
Stewart may only be 9 points back, but he still sits in fourth place. Chad Reed and Ryan Dungey sit in the 2nd and third place spots, while the fifth contender for the crown, Trey Canard, broke his leg earlier this week and will be out of the title hunt.
“Tonight was awesome,” said Stewart. “I had fun all day. I thought the track was awesome, it was so tough. I was just trying to stay consistent because I knew it was going crazy behind me. You can look out there and see how rough it is, but my San Manuel Yamaha was working awesome. I’m looking forward to Salt Lake City.”
Stewart was the only rider to have a flawless race last night. Villopoto, Reed, and Dungey, all dropped their bikes in one spot or another last night, opening the door for the former Supercross champion to take his second win in a row.
Last night’s race embodied the 2011 Supercross season so far, and likely tells a little about the final two races. With the top four riders racing the way they are, one small mistake can leave you in the dust. As we enter into the final two rounds of the season, there is no more room for error.
