2011 AMA Supercross Preview: St. Louis

edwardjones_domeThe 2011 AMA Supercross is heading into the final rounds of the season, and we're pretty tight at the top. After the St. Louis event on Saturday night, there will be just three races left in the 2011 racing season. Ryan Villopoto currently leads the way, but Chad Reed, Ryan Dungey, Trey Canard and James Stewart are all within striking distance.

Villopoto is just 6 points ahead of Reed at the moment, but the small points lead won't be the only thing on Villopoto's mind when he enters the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis this weekend. The last time Villopoto raced at the dome was when he broke his leg in 2010. Villopoto is the favorite to win the 2011 season, but one mistake could change the leaderboard.

2010 champion Ryan Dungey is also threatening for the lead. Dungey has been the most consistent rider this season, scoring 10 out of 13 podiums, but he only has one win to his name. In a season of crashes and DNFs, Dungey's consistency could land him his second consecutive title. Dungey is only 1 point behind Reed and 7 points behind Villopoto.

If there has been a dark horse this season, it's been Trey Canard. Canard, who is in his rookie year in the premier class, has taken home three race victories and is currently 16 points behind the leader. It would be easy for a rookie in Canard's position to get a little over ambitious, but Canard is taking a very level headed approach.

"We'll see (about winning the championship)," said Canard. "I'm just going to keep doing the best I can. That's all I can control."

James Stewart is the final challenger for the 2011 Supercross title. Stewart has had an up and down season this year, but is still a contender for the championship. Stewart will have to step it up during the final races if he wants to win this year. Stewart hasn't won a race since round 5 in Anaheim.
