The 2011 AMA Supercross season is already halfway over. Through 8 rounds James Stewart and Ryan Villopoto have battled for supremacy, but riders like Ryan Dungey, Trey Canard, and Chad Reed, are all within striking distance. The Supercross series will now head to Daytona to start the second half of the season.
Villopoto currently leads the Supercross series with 161 points, just 10 points more than Stewart. The gap between the top two would have been even closer, but Stewart missed out on a podium finish in Atlanta due to a late race crash with Reed.
With his win in Atlanta, Villopoto collected his third victory of the season, equalling Stewart's race win total. Reed and Canard, who sit at third and fourth on the overall leaderboard, have also claimed race wins this season. Ryan Dungey, the last rider within 25 points of the leader, has certainly found a few podiums this season, but he has yet to find himself on top.
The 2011 season has seen 4 riders capture victories, but any number of riders could win in Daytona. Brett Metcalfe and Andrew Short have both shown some great speed this year, and Dungey is sure to be hungry to taste victory in front of the huge Daytona crowd.
To make things even more interesting, the Daytona track is being designed by Randy Carmichael, and it is sure to be one of the most difficult tracks of the season.
